A trapezium has parallel sides measuring 9 cm and 5 cm, and the perpendicular height between them is 4 cm. Work out its area in square centimetres.

Sum of parallel $sides = 9 + 5 = 14$ cm.

Step 2

Average of parallel $sides = 14$ ÷ 2 = 7 cm.

Step 3

$Area = 7$ × 4 = 28 $cm^2$.

Two similar rectangular storage boxes have lengths 6 cm and 9 cm. The smaller box is 5.2 cm wide. What is the width of the larger box?

Step 1

Because the shapes are similar, all corresponding dimensions share the same ratio as the lengths: 9 ÷ 6 = 1.5.

Step 2

Multiply the smaller width by 1.5: 5.2 × 1.5 = 7.8.

Step 3

Therefore the larger box is 7.8 cm wide.

The larger width is 7.8 cm.

12 × 8 = 96, and halving gives 48, so the kite’s area is 48 square centimetres.

Test $x = 3.4$: $3.4^3 - 5$ × 3.4 = 22.304 (> 20) while $x = 3.3$ gives 19.437 (< 20), so the solution lies between 3.3 and 3.4.

Step 3

Refining, $x = 3.32$ gives 19.986 (< 20) and $x = 3.33$ gives 20.276 (> 20); the closer value is 3.32.

Step 4

Therefore x ≈ 3.3 to 1 decimal place.

When x is written as a fraction a/b in its simplest form, what is the value of a + b?

Step 1

Let $x = 0$.$\overline{63}$. Multiplying by 100 gives $100x = 63$.$\overline{63}$.

Step 2

Subtracting x from 100x gives $99x = 63$, so $x = 63/99 = 7/11$.

Step 3

Therefore $a = 7$ and $b = 11$, so $a + b = 18$.
